Ad iinnotcpoluticdoliinnngiocasfloncpeirawalcitknicnfelouwiennlvecodelg.veeC,shsnakunimlglseerotohruesaotrftayitcutsoudrges-s,gests that a group of emergency physicians will notalter practice solely via democratic or objective processes, but through the social influence of individuals(opinion leaders [OLs]) within the group. Opinionleaders are respected sources of information who areconnected to novel ideas and possess sufficient interpersonal skills to exert influence on others’ decisionmaking. We discuss methods to identify OLs and thelimited evidence that supports their influence on clinical practice. An understanding of the role of OLs mayassist emergency physicians with incorporating newideas into their clinical groups.
