The use of deep brain stimulation has become increasinglycommon for the treatment of movement disorders, includingParkinson disease. Although deep brain stimulation isgenerally very successful in alleviating the extrapyramidalsymptoms of Parkinson disease, side effects can occur. Thiscase report describes a patient presenting to the emergencydepartment in a state of extreme aggression 3 days after achange in the parameters of his bilateral subthalamicnucleus stimulator. We review the complications of deepbrain stimulation relevant to the emergency physician andprovide some practical information on stimulator adjustmentin an emergency.
