Enhanced competency training is becoming anincreasingly prominent aspect of the Royal College ofPhysicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) emergency medicine (EM) program. Defined loosely asadditional training in an area relevant to the practice ofEM, the enhanced competency training pursued byCanadian EM residents can include accredited subspecialty fellowships such as intensive care or pediatricEM; unaccredited fellowships in areas such as simulation or emergency medical services; and graduatedegree programs in medical education, public health,epidemiology, or business administration. These programs are pursued by a large number of EM traineesin the RCPSC program, often during their fourthpostgraduate year of training.
