Continuing professional development hasn’t always been one of my priorities. Like many other professionals, I suspect, at the beginning of my career I was completely focussed on finding work and, having secured my first professional post, all my energy was devoted to learning enough to do that job well. Then, as soon as I felt the work was no longer stretching me I began to look for the next challenge, ideally with a nice increase in salary to go with it. This pattern repeated itself a few times and CPD was just something that happened, a sort of sideeffect that resulted from the climb up the career ladder rather than something I planned. It was only when I began to feel more settled and secure as a professional that I began to appreciate its importance and started to record, evaluate and, sometimes, even plan it.
