摘要

The track Driveby on the album Sleeps with angels by Neil Young and Crazy Horse opens with the line “It’s a random kind of thing”. What does this mean? What do we know for sure – well it is a “thing” which is a start – however this is compromised when the words “kind of” are considered. So it is not actually a “thing,” it is just a “kind of thing”. The stability of our musings is further undermined when we include the other significant descriptor – “random”. So this kind of thing is not even stable in its nature – it is random. Now this may be fine for Neil Young, capturing intense personal lyrics – it will not do for the conscientious cataloguer, metadata technician or whatever we call the good people who undertake that vital work! Cataloguing requires more certainty, clarity, and definition than this lyric offers.
