Wecomparedthelong-termeffectsofanewlydesignedliquiddietwithacommerciallyavailabledrydietinNewZealandWhiterabbits.Bodyweightgain,feedconsumption,andplasmalipidconcentrationsweremeasuredperiodicallythroughoutthe1-yearstudy.Inaddition,specifichepaticenzymeactivitiesinserumwerequantifiedtoexaminetheeffectsofliquiddietontheliveroverthe1-yearfeedingtrial.At52weeks,bodyweightgainsbetweentheliquid-anddry-fedgroupsweresimilar.Regardlessofsex,plasmaphospholipidconcentrationswerehigherinthecontrolgroupthanintheliquid-fedgroup.Plasmatriglycerideconcentrationswereincreasedinliquid-fedfemalerabbits,comparedwitheithermalegrouporcontrol-fedfemales.Asomewhatsimilareffectwasobservedinplasmacholesterolconcentration,whichwashigherinfemalerabbitsregardlessofdiettype.Afterthe52-weektrial,therabbitshadnoclinicalbiochemicalsignsofliverdamage.ResultsofthisstudyindicatethataliquiddietcanbefedtoNewZealandWhiterabbitsforalongperiod,andmayprovideanalternativeroute(foodsource)forfuturepathophysiologicstudies.
