Baboonsinacaptivebreedingcolonyweremonitoredtwiceayear,andnewadditionswerescreenedonarrivalforsheddingofHerpesviruspapio2(HVP2)andserologicreactivitytotheagent.For128individualanimalstestedoveraperiodof1.5years,sheddingofinfectiveviruswasdetectedin13of342swabspecimens(3.8%),eachoftheseincidentsrepresentingsheddingbyadifferentanimal.Amonglong-termcolonyanimals,infectiveviruswasrecoveredononlytwooccasions(5of236swabspecimensfromfiveindividuals).Inallbutoneinstance,animalssheddingviruswereinfants,notadults,andallanimalsweresheddingvirusintheoralcavity.Oneofthesefiveinstanceswasanisolatedcase,butfour(threeinfantsandoneadult)wereclusteredwithinasinglebreedinggroup.MolecularanalysesoftheHVP2isolatesfromthisclusterindicatedthattheylikelyarosefromasinglecommonsource,probablythemotherofoneoftheinfants.Noneof31wild-caughtbaboonsaddedtothecolonyduringthisperiodwerefoundtobesheddinginfectivevirus,despite93.5%ofthembeingseropositiveforHVP2.Incontrast,6of18adultbaboons(allseropositive)transferredintothecolonyfromanotherbreedingcolonywerefoundtobesheddingHVP2eitherorally(3of6)orgenitally(3of6).Inaddition,2of8juvenilebaboonsinthisshipmentwerefoundtobesheddingvirusintheoropharynx.Overall,10of13instancesofHVP2isolationwerefromtheoropharynxratherthanthegenitaltract,and6of13baboonssheddingviruswereinfantsorjuvenilesratherthanadults.Theseresultssuggestthat,althoughvenerealtransmissionofHVP2occursamongadultanimals,oralinfectionofyoung,sexuallyimmaturebaboonsisnotuncommon.
