Age-relatedchangesinsystolicbloodpressurewereassessed,usingthesenescence-acceleratedmouse(SAM)modelforagingresearchwithstrainsSAMR1,SAMP1,andSAMP8.Eachofthestrainsmanifestedacharacteristicchangeinbloodpressurewithage.TheSAMR1strain,withnormalaging,didnothavechronologicchangesfrom2to27monthsofage.TheSAMP1strain,withacceleratedsenescence,hadasignificantincreaseinbloodpressurewithage,andsome(8of39)micemanifestedhypertensivevasculardiseasecharacterizedbyhighbloodpressure,cardiachypertrophy,andarteriolarfibrinoidnecrosisat11to14monthsofage.Thegradualincreaseinbloodpressureafter8to10monthswasconsideredtobeprecededbyprogressiverenalchanges,fromglomerulonephritistocontractionofthekidney,suggestingthatthehighbloodpressureintheSAMP1strainwasofrenalorigin.BloodpressureintheSAMP8strain,withage-relateddeficitsinlearningandmemory,graduallydecreasedafter5to7monthsofage,andwassuggestedtobeduetotheastroglioticchangesinresponsetospongiformdegenerationinthemedullaoblongataat11to14and15to18monthsofage.
