Secondaryhepaticamyloidosisinnonhumanprimatescarriesagraveprognosisonceanimalsbecomeclinicallyill.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoestablishserologicparametersthatpotentiallycouldbeusedtoidentifyrhesusmacaquesundergoingsubclinicaldevelopmentofsecondaryhepaticamyloidosis.Aretrospectiveanalysiswascompletedbyusingserumbiochemicalprofilesfrom26histologicallydiagnosedamyloidoticmacaquesevaluatedat2stagesofdisease,clinicalandsubclinical(3to32mopriortoclinicalsignsofdisease).Standardserumbiochemistryvaluesforcaseswerecomparedwithinstitutionalage-andgender-specificreferencesrangesbyconstructionof95%confidenceintervalsforthedifferencebetweenmeans.Inaddition,19histologicallydiagnosedamyloidoticmacaquesand19age-matchedcontrolswereassayedforchangesinvariousparametersbyusingroutinelybanked,frozen(#8211;80°C)seraavailablefromclinicalandsubclinicaltimepoints.Clinicallyamyloidoticanimalsdisplayedincreasedlevelsofalkalinephosphatase,aspartateaminotransferase,lactatedehydrogenase,gammaglutamyltranspeptidase,andmacrophagecolony-stimulatingfactorandsignificantlydecreasedquantitiesofalbuminandtotalcholesterol.Subclinicalamyloidoticanimalsdisplayedincreasedlevelsofalkalinephosphatase,aspartateaminotransferase,lactatedehydrogenase,andserumamyloidAanddecreasedconcentrationsofalbuminandtotalcholesterol.Theserologicparametersstudiedindicateatemporalrelationshipofthesefactorsnotpreviouslydescribed,showaclearpatternofdiseaseprogression,andcouldbeusefulinsubclinicaldiseasedetection.
