Campylobacterjejuniis1ofthemostcommonentericbacterialpathogensworldwide.Themechanismsofpathogenesisremainobscure,inpartbecauseoflimitationsofsmallanimalmodels.YoungferretsdevelopdiarrheawhenfedC.jejuni,buttheirpathologyandtheimmuneresponseafterinfectionhavenotbeenexaminedindetail.Inthepresentstudy,weexaminedthepathogenesisofC.jejuniCG8421andassociatedimmuneresponsesinferrets.AfteroralinfectionwithC.jejuniCG8421,86.7%oftheanimalsdevelopeddiarrheaandinflammatoryresponsesthatweresimilartothoseseeninhumaninfection.Pronouncedhistopathologicchangesinthecolonicmucosaofinfectedanimalswereobservedduringtheacutephase(days1through3)ofinfection.Electronmicrographsofcolonicepitheliumrevealeddisruptionofthevilliandinternalizedbacteriathatwerenotwithinmembranevacuoles.Duringtheacutephase,C.jejuniwasisolatedfromtheliversof7of9(78%)animals,andbacteriawerevisualizedimmunohistochemicallyintheliversfrom5ofthe7animals(71%)fromwhichC.jejuniwasisolated.AvigoroussystemicandmucosalimmuneresponsetoCampylobacterantigenswaselicitedafterinfectionofferrets.ThedatapresentedcontributetothecurrentknowledgeofthepathogenicityofandimmunologicresponsetoC.jejuniCG8421inferretsandbetterunderstandingofthismodel.
