Serologicscreeningforinfectiousdiseaseinsentinelmicefromrodentcoloniesisexpensiveandlabor-intensive,ofteninvolvingmultipleassaysforseveraldifferentinfectiousagents.Previously,weestablishednormalreferencerangesfortheproteinfractionsofseverallaboratorystrainsofmicebyusingacommerciallyavailableagarosesystemofproteinelectrophoresis.Inthecurrentstudy,weaddressproteinfractionationandquantitationofacutephaseproteins(APP)inmiceexperimentallyinfectedwithSendaivirusormouseparvovirus.Wefurtherinvestigatethismethodologybyusingsamplesfromsentinelmicefromcolonieswithendemicinfection.Allstudygroupsshowedsignificantincreasesin#59138;globulins.Variousotherproteinfractionsshowedmildvariablechanges;significantdifferenceswerenotdetectedforindividualAPP.TheseresultscontrastthesignificantchangesobservedinAPPandproteinelectrophoresisbyusingthestandardmethodsofinducinginflammatoryresponsesthroughinjectionofcompleteFreundadjuvantorLPS.ThesepresentdatasuggestthatalthoughquantitationofindividualAPPmaynotbehelpful,#59138;globulinlevelsmayreflectinfectioninlaboratorymiceandprovideapossibleadjuncttotraditionalscreeningmethods.
