Thepurposeofthisstudywastoconductacomprehensiveevaluationofthevascularsupplytothefemoralhead,includingthevesselsthatgiverisetotheterminalperfusingbranches.Usingacastingagent,wehighlightedtheanatomyoftheexternaliliacandischiaticarterieswiththeirassociatedbranchesafteranatomicdissectionof24hipsfrom12Leghornchickens.Weconfirmedpublishedfindingsregardingperfusionofthefemoralheadandidentified3previouslyundescribedarterialbranchestothisstructure.Thefirstbranch(theacetabularbranchofthefemoralisartery)wassuppliedbythefemoralisarteryanddirectlyperfusedtheacetabulumandfemoralhead.Thesecondbranch(thelateralretinacularartery)wasatributaryofthefemoralisarterythatdirectlysuppliedthefemoralhead.Finally,wefoundthatthemiddlefemoralnutrientarterysuppliesapreviouslyundescribedascendingintraosseousbranch(theascendingbranchofthemiddlefemoralnutrientartery)thatperfusesthefemoralhead.Preciseunderstandingofthemajorvascularbranchestothefemoralheadwouldallowforcompleteorselectiveligationofitsbloodsupplyandenablethecreationofareproduciblebipedalmodeloffemoralheadosteonecrosis.
