Radiotelemetrywasusedtoevaluatediet-relatedelevationofbloodpressureinadultYucatanminiatureswine.Systolicarterialbloodpressure(SAP),diastolicatrialbloodpressure(DAP),heartrate,andlocomotoractivitywereassessedin9-or11-mo-oldYucatanminiaturepigsfedastandarddietoraNorthAmerican-typediethighinsalt,fat,andsugar(HSFS).Comparedwithpigsfedstandarddiet,pigsfedHSFSdietshowedmarkedlyelevatedSAP(132±3comparedwith156±6mmHg),whereasDAPwasunchanged(92±2comparedwith99±5mmHg).Inaddition,allpigsweremodestlysensitivetoshort-termchangesindietarysalt,asindicatedbya6%to7%responseinbloodpressureparameters.Accordingtothesedata,theincreaseinSAPforpigsontheHSFSdietwastoolargetobeexplainedbytheNaClcontentofthedietalone.Wefoundnoevidenceofendothelialdysfunction,andtherelaxationresponsesofisolatedcoronaryarteriesactuallywereenhancedintheHSFSgroup.Inconclusion,inaYucatanminiaturepigsmodelchronicallyfedaHSFSdiet,DAPdidnotincrease,butSAPandpulsepressureappearedtobeaffectedbyhighdietarylevelsoffatorsugar(orboth).
