BackgroundandPurpose:Severalnon-humanprimatespeciesareusedaslaboratoryanimalsforvarioustypesofstudies.Althoughimportationofmonkeysmayintroducedifferentdiseases,specialattentionhasrecentlybeendrawntoMarburgandEbolaviruses.Thisreviewpresentedherediscussesthepotentialriskofthesevirusesforpersonsworkingwithnon-humanprimatesaslaboratoryanimalsbyfocusingonepidemiology,virology,symptoms,pathogenesis,naturalreservoir,transmission,quarantineofnon-humanprimates,therapy,andprevention.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brConclusion:Atotalof23MarburgandEbolavirusoutbreakscausingviralhemorrhagicfeverhasbeenreportedamonghumansandmonkeyssincethefirstoutbreakinMarburg,Germanyin1967.Mostofthe1,100humancases,withnearly800deaths,developedinAfricaduemainlytodirectandintimatecontactwithinfectedpatients.Fewhumancaseshavedevelopedaftercontactwithnon-humanprimatesusedforvariousscientificpurposes.However,adequatequarantineshouldbeappliedtopreventhumaninfectionsnotonlyduetoMarburgandEbolaviruses,butalsotootherinfectiveagents.Byfollowingproperguidelines,thefilovirusinfectionriskforpeopleworkingwithnon-humanprimatesduringquarantineexists,butisminimal.Thereseemstobelittleriskforfilovirusinfectionsafteranadequatequarantineperiod.Therefore,non-humanprimatescanbeusedaslaboratoryanimals,withlittleriskoffilovirusinfections,providedadequateprecautionsaretaken.
