Profoundneutropeniathatprovidesanopportunityforinfectionstodevelopintosepsisremainsanimportantcauseofmorbidityandmortalityinpatientsafterirradiation.Humanclinicalstudiesfindextremelylowconcentrationsofcholesterol(lessthan120mg/dl)associatedwithhighriskofdeathincriticallyilladultpatientsadmittedtointensivecareunits.Thisretrospectivestudywasinitiatedaspartofseparateinvestigationsofradiation-inducedacquiredinfectionsin2largeanimalspeciesreceivinghigh-dosewhole-bodyirradiationfromasupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"60/supCo#59138;-photonsource.NineYucatanminipigs(Susscrofadomestica)and16rhesusmacaques(Macacamulatta)wereevaluatedforsepsis,serumlipidandlipoproteinconcentrations,andotherbloodparameters.Foreachspecies,animalsweregroupedinto2categories#8212;septicandnonseptic#8212;andseverityofdiseasewasquantifiedbyuseofascoringsystem.Significantlylowerhigh-densitylipoprotein(HDL)concentrationswerefoundinthesepticpigsat24and48hascomparedwithnonsepticpigs.HDLwassignificantlydecreasedinsepticmacaqueswithin24hand3to4,6to7,and9to10dafterdiagnosisofsepsis,comparedwiththatinnonsepticmacaques.Coupledwithhypocholesterolemia,decreasedserumHDLwastheparameterthatwasassociatedwithdiseaseseverityatthetimeofsampling.OurdataindicatethatHDLisareliablemarkerforseverityofdiseaseinthese2preclinicalmodelsofirradiation-inducedsepsis.
