Atrialfibrillationisacommonarrhythmiawithconsiderablemorbidityandmortality.Limitationsinstudyingboththemechanismsandtherapyofatrialfibrillationariseduetothepaucityofmodelsthatyieldsufficientlyhigh-qualitydata,arenotcostly,andinwhichatrialfibrillationissustainedlongenoughtomakethenecessaryobservations.Thecaninemodelwepresentisbasedonthehypothesisthatatrialfibrillationrequiresheterogeneityofrepolarization,thatdistributionofvagalfibersisheterogeneousintheatria,andthatatrialfibrillationwillpersistafterreflexstimulationofvagalefferentsbyincreasedsystemicarterialpressure.Dogswereanesthetizedwithmorphine#8211;chloralosebecausethiscombinationmaintainsnearlyintactautonomiccontrol.Systemicarterialpressurewaselevatedapproximately75mmHgduringinfusionofphenylephrine(2#59157;g/kg#729;minsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"#8722;1/sup).Therightatriumwaspacedfor20minat40Hz.Atrialfibrillationwassustainedaftercessationofatrialpacingindogsreceivingphenylephrine,butterminatedwithinsecondsinnormotensiveanimals.Inconclusion,atrialfibrillationcanbemaintainedforatleast40minaftercessationofrapidatrialpacingindogswithphenylephrine-inducedhypertension.
