Osteoporosisisanimportantsystemicdisorder,affectingmainlyCaucasianwomen,withadiverseandmultifactorialetiology.Alargevarietyofanimalspecies,includingrodents,rabbits,dogs,andprimates,havebeenusedasanimalmodelsinosteoporosisresearch.Amongthese,thelaboratoryratisthepreferredanimalformostresearchers.Itsskeletonhasbeenstudiedextensively,andalthoughthereareseverallimitationstoitssimilaritytothehumancondition,thesecanbeovercomethroughdetailedknowledgeofitsspecifictraitsorwithcertaintechniques.Therathasbeenusedinmanyexperimentalprotocolsleadingtoboneloss,includinghormonalinterventions(ovariectomy,orchidectomy,hypophysectomy,parathyroidectomy),immobilization,anddietarymanipulations.Theaimofthecurrentreviewisnotonlytopresenttheovariectomizedratanditsadvantagesasanappropriatemodelfortheresearchofosteoporosis,butalsotoprovideinformationaboutthemostrelevantageandbonesiteselectionaccordingtothegoalsofeachexperimentalprotocol.Inaddition,severalmethodsofbonemassevaluationareassessed,suchasbiochemicalmarkers,densitometry,histomorphometry,andbonemechanicaltesting,thatareusedformonitoringandevaluationofthisanimalmodelinpreventiveortherapeuticstrategiesforosteoporosis.
