Thewords'guineapig'aresynonymouswithscientificexperimentation,butmuchlessisknownaboutthisspeciesthanmanyotherlaboratoryanimals.Thisanimalmodelhasbeenusedforapproximately200yandwasthefirsttobeusedinthestudyofinfectiousdiseasessuchastuberculosisanddiphtheria.Todaytheguineapigisusedasamodelforanumberofinfectiousbacterialdiseases,includingpulmonary,sexuallytransmitted,ocularandaural,gastrointestinal,andotherinfectionsthatthreatenthelivesofhumans.Moststudiesontheimmuneresponsetothesediseases,withpotentialtherapiesandvaccines,havebeenconductedinanimalmodels(forexample,mouse)thatmayhavelesssimilaritytohumansbecauseofthelargenumberofimmunologicreagentsavailablefortheseotherspecies.Thisreviewpresentssomeofthediseasesforwhichtheguineapigisregardedasthepremiermodeltostudyinfectionsbecauseofitssimilaritytohumanswithregardtosymptomsandimmuneresponse.Furthermore,fordiseasesinwhichguineapigsshareparallelpathogenesisofdiseasewithhumans,theyarepotentiallythebestanimalmodelfordesigningtreatmentsandvaccines.Futurestudiesofimmuneregulationofthesediseases,noveltherapies,andpreventativemeasuresrequirethedevelopmentofnewimmunologicreagentsdesignedspecificallyfortheguineapig.
