InfectionwithHelicobacterspeciesisendemicinmanyanimalfacilitiesandmayalterthepenetranceofinflammatoryboweldisease(IBD)phenotypes.However,littleisknownabouttherelativepathogenicityofH.typhlonius,H.rodentium,andcombinedinfectioninIBDmodels.WeinfectedadultandneonatalIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"#8211;/#8211;/supmicewithH.typhlonius,H.rodentium,orbothbacteria.TheseverityofIBDandincidenceofinflammation-associatedcolonicneoplasiawereassessedinthepresenceandabsenceofantiHelicobactertherapy.InfectedIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"#8211;/#8211;/supmicedevelopedIBDwithseverityofnoninfected(minimaltonoinflammation)H.rodentiumH.typhloniusmixedH.rodentium+H.typhlonius(severeinflammation).Inflammation-associatedcolonicneoplasiawascommonininfectedmiceanditsincidencecorrelatedwithIBDseverity.Combinedtreatmentwithamoxicillin,clarithromycin,metronidazole,andomeprazoleeradicatedHelicobacterininfectedmiceandamelioratedestablishedIBDinbothinfectedandnoninfectedmice.InfectionofIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"#8211;/#8211;/supmicewithH.rodentium,H.typhlonius,orbothorganismscantriggerdevelopmentofsevereIBDthateventuallyleadstocolonicneoplasia.Thehighincidenceandmultiplicityofneoplasticlesionsininfectedmicemakethismodelwell-suitedforfutureresearchrelatedtothedevelopmentandchemopreventionofinflammation-associatedcoloncancer.ThesimilarantiinflammatoryeffectofantibiotictherapyinHelicobacter-infectedand-noninfectedIL10supxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"#8211;/#8211;/supmicewithcolitisindicatesthatunidentifiedmicrobiotainadditiontoHelicobacterdrivetheinflammatoryprocessinthismodel.ThisfindingsuggestsacomplexroleforbothHelicobacterandotherintestinalmicrobiotaintheonsetandperpetuationofIBDinthesesusceptiblehosts.
