Ulcerativedermatitis(UD)inC57BL/6miceispoorlyunderstoodandchallengingtotreat.WesoughttoevaluatetheevidenceregardingcommonlycitedriskfactorsforUDandreportedUDtreatments.Theterms'ulcerativedermatitis'and'C57BL/6'wereusedtosearch3electronicdatabases.Theresulting347articleswerescreenedtoidentifypublicationsthatcomparedtheriskofspontaneousUDinwild-typeC57BL/6miceaccordingtosex,season,diet,orageandthosethatcomparedthedegreeofhealingorrateoflesionresolutionaccordingtotheinterventionused.Articleswereevaluatedbyusingpublishedcriteriaforassessingmethodologicquality,includingstudydesign,numberofanimalsperstudygroup,casedefinition,methodofdiagnosis,randomization,enrollmentcriteria,exclusioncriteria,andoutcomes.Thesearchidentified11publicationsonriskfactorsthatmettheinclusioncriteria,andnopublicationonUDtreatmentmetallofthecriteria.Relaxingtheinclusioncriteriaforreportingofriskfactorsandtreatmentoutcomestoincludebothwild-typeC57BL/6miceandgeneticallyengineeredmiceonaB6backgroundyielded12publicationsonriskfactorsand3publicationsontreatment.Dietaryfactors,particularlycaloricrestriction,appeartoinfluenceUDrisk.FemalesexwasinconsistentlyassociatedwithahigherriskofUD,whichmostoftenoccurredin13-to24-mo-oldmiceinthestudiesthatwerereviewed.Only1ofthe3publicationsthatevaluatedUDtreatmentsincludedanuntreatedgrouporalternativetherapycontrol.FurtherresearchisneededtoexploreepidemiologicaspectsofUDandtocomparetreatmentoptions.
