Helicobacterspp.aresomeofthemostprevalentbacterialcontaminantsoflaboratorymice.AlthoughabundantdataregardingthediseasesassociatedwithH.hepaticusinfectionareavailable,littleisknownaboutthepathogenicityofH.ganmani,whichwasfirstisolatedin2001fromtheintestinesoflaboratorymice.TheobjectiveofthisstudywastoevaluatethehostresponsetoH.ganmanicolonizationinH.hepaticusdisease-resistantC57BL/6anddisease-susceptibleA/JandIL10-deficientmice.MicewereinoculatedwithH.ganmani,H.hepaticus,orBrucellabroth.Cecallesionscores,cecalgeneexpression,andHelicobacterloadweremeasuredat4and90dafterinoculation.Atbothtimepoints,miceinoculatedwithH.ganmanihadsimilarorsignificantlymorecopiesofcecum-associatedHelicobacterDNAthandidmiceinoculatedwithH.hepaticus.Whencomparedwiththoseofsham-inoculatedcontrolmice,cecallesionscoresat4and90dafterinoculationwerenotsignificantlygreaterinH.ganmani-inoculatedA/J,C57BL/6,orIL10-deficientmice.AnalysisofcecalgeneexpressiondemonstratedthatH.ganmaniinfectionfailedtocausesignificantelevationsofIFN#947;inA/J,C57BL/6,orIL10-deficientmice.However,inIL10-deficientmice,H.ganmaniinfectionwasassociatedwithasignificantincreaseintheexpressionoftheproinflammatorycytokineIL12/23p40.AlthoughH.ganmaniinfectioninthisstudyfailedtoinducethetyphlitisthatisthehallmarkofH.hepaticusinfection,infectionwithH.ganmaniwasassociatedwithalterationsininflammatorycytokinesinIL10-deficientmice.
