Inrecentyears,theassociationbetweenhyperlipidemiaandthedevelopmentofarteriosclerosishasbeenaddressedinseveralstudies.Rabbitmodelsofhypertriglyceridemia(TGH)andpostprandialhypertriglyceridemia(PHT)havebeendevelopedattheauthors'institute.TGHrabbitsmanifestpathologysimilartothatofhumanswithTGH,suchasxanthoma,inadditiontoatherosclerosisofarterioles.Furthermore,PHTrabbitsshowvisceralobesity,insulinresistance,andimpairedglucosetolerance,withpathologicfeaturessimilartothoseofthemetabolicsyndromeassumedtobethecauseofhumanischemicheartdisease.ThisstudywasdesignedtoinvestigatethehistopathologicfeaturesofTGHandPHTrabbits.TGHrabbitsshowedadvancedaorticatherosclerosis,accompaniedbyintimalthickeningofcoronaryandrenalarteries,fattyliverchanges,andxanthoma.PHTrabbitsdemonstratedaorticintimalthickeningandhepaticfattydegeneration.TheresultsofthisstudysuggestthatTGHandPHTrabbitsareusefulanimalmodelsforstudyinghumanhyperlipidemiaandmetabolicsyndromeandthecardiovasculardiseasesthatresultfromtheseconditions.
