Femalevervetmonkeys(Chlorocebusaethiopssabaeus)areusedasanexperimentalmodelforchronicdiseasesrelevanttowomen'shealth.However,reproductivesenescence(menopause)hasnotyetbeencharacterizedforvervetmonkeys.Herewedescribethehistologic,hormonal,andmenstrualmarkersofreproductivesenescenceinvervetmonkeysfromtheWakeForestVervetResearchColony.Ovariesfrommonkeys(age,0to27y)wereseriallysectioned(5#956;m),stained,andphotographed.Inevery100thsection,thenumbersofprimordial,primary,andsecondaryfolliclesweredetermined,andtriplicatemeasurementswereusedtocalculatemeannumbersoffolliclesperovary.Antimüllerianhormone(AMH),folliclestimulatinghormone,andmenstrualcyclelengthweremeasuredinadditionalmonkeys.PrimordialfolliclesandAMHdecreasedsignificantlywithage,andsignificantcorrelationsbetweennumbersofprimordialandprimaryfolliclesandbetweennumbersofprimaryandsecondaryfollicleswerenoted.Histologicevaluationrevealedthatovariesfrom4agedmonkeys(olderthan23y)weresenescent.Oneagedmonkeytransitionedtomenopause,experiencingcycleirregularityover4y,eventualcessationofmenses,andplasmaAMHbelowthelevelofdetection.Finally,withincreasingage,thepercentageoffemalevervetswithoffspringdeclinedsignificantly.Thepresentstudyprovidesinsightintoovarianagingandreproductivesenescenceinvervetmonkeys.Resultshighlighttheimportanceofconsideringthisnonhumanprimateasamodeltoinvestigatetherelationshipsbetweenovarianagingandchronicdiseaserisk.
