Mousehepatitisvirus(MHV)causesthemostprevalentviralinfectionincontemporarylaboratorymousecolonies.Accordingtotheirprimaryreplicationsite,differentstrainsofMHVsegregateintotwooverlappingbiotypes,enterotropicandpolytropic.Thesetwogroupsvarygreatlyindiseasepattern,pathogenicity,immuneresponse,anddurationofinfection.Historically,thepolytropicMHVstrainsrepresenttheextensivelystudiedprototypestrainsthathaveminimalenterotropism,whereasenterotropicMHVstrainshavebeenlesscharacterized.AnecdotalreportssuggestthatmostMHVstrainsencounteredtodaybelongtotheenterotropicbiotype.Wehaveidentified15isolatesofMHVfrom19independentenzooticallyinfectedmousecolonies.Sequencingofavariableregionofthenucleoprotein(N)geneofeachisolateconfirmedthatallwereindependentgeneticvariants.Theprincipaltissuetropismofthenewisolateswasdeterminedbyexperimentalinoculationofinfantmiceandexaminationofintestine,liver,spleen,andbrainforlesions.Nineisolatesinfectedonlyintestine;fourisolatesinfectedintestineandliver;oneisolateinfectedintestine,liver,andbrain;andoneisolateinfectedliver.TheseresultsconfirmthattheenterotropicMHVbiotypeispredominantincontemporarylaboratorymousecolonies.TheMHVbiotypefeaturesneedtobetakenintoconsiderationwhendealingwithMHVinfections.
