Accurateinformationonchangesinsmallintestinalmicrofloraindogsisratherlimitedbecauseofdifficultiesinobtainingsamplesofsmallintestinalchyme.Inthestudyreportedhere,intussusceptednipplevalvesweresurgicallyplacedintothejejunumofsevenlaboratorybeaglestoobtainintestinaljuicesamples.Theinfluenceofthefistulaonintestinalmotilitywasdeterminedbyuseofbarium-impregnatedpolyethylenespheres(BIPS)andonmicroflorabyuseofbacterialculturing.TheBIPSwerefedtwoweeksbeforesurgeryandagainfiveweeksaftersurgery.Bacterialsampleswerecollectedbefore(fecalsamples),during(smallintestinalsamples)and11weeksaftersurgery.Therewerenosurgicalcomplications,andtheanimalstoleratedthefistulawell.Meanorocolictransitpercentagewas93%beforeand83%aftersurgery,andnotablechangesingastrointestinalmotilitywerenotseen,exceptinonedog.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brThesurgerydidnotmarkedlyalterthebacterialflorainfeces.Microfloradidchangeinsmallintestinalsamples;however,methodologicfactorsmayexplainmostofthesedifferences.Inconclusion,thenipplevalveisapromisingmethodthatcreateseasyandsafelong-termaccesstothejejunumandappearsnottohaveaninfluenceonintestinalfunction.
