Azebrafinch(Taeniopygiaguttata)housedinaneurosciencelaboratorywasobservedtohavenumerousfeathermites.Subsequently,similarmiteswerefoundonotherbirdsintheanimalfacilityandresearchspace.Themostabundantmitewasanovel,undescribedspeciesinthegenusNeocheyletiella.WhereasknownNeocheyletiellamiteshavepreviouslybeencharacterizedasskinparasitesofvariousbirdsworldwide,thespeciesonthezebrafinchesisuniquebecauseitlivesandbuildsnestsinthefeathers.Infrequentspecimensofa'true'feathermite,anewspeciesofMegninialges,werepresentalso.Althoughmultipletreatmentsusingapyrethrinspraywereeffectiveineradicatingthemites,topicalivermectinlaterwasfoundtobemoreefficacious,bettertoleratedbythebirds,andlesslaborintensive.Thiscasehighlightsthegeneraldearthofinformationregardingectoparasitesinzebrafinches,eventhoughthesearethemostfrequentlyusedsongbirdsinbiomedicalresearch.Themiteepizooticalsounderscoresthediversepathogenspossibleinzebrafinchesthatarrivefromoutsidesourcesandwhyongoinghealthmonitoringoffinchcoloniesiswarranted.
