Temporal Evolution of MRI Characteristics in Dogs with Collagenase-Induced Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Intracerebralhemorrhage(ICH)isoneofthemostlethaltypesofstroke.Neuroimagingtechniques,particularlyMRI,haveimprovedthediagnosticaccuracyofICH.TheMRIcharacteristicsoftheevolvingstagesofICHinhumans#8212;butnotthoseindogs#8212;havebeendescribed.Inthisstudy,wedocumentthetemporalMRIcharacteristicsinacaninemodelofcollagenase-inducedICH.Specifically,ICHwasinducedin5healthybeaglesbyinjecting500UofbacterialcollagenasefromClostridiumhistolyticum,whichwasdeliveredintotheparietallobeover5minbyusingamicroinfusionpump.T1-andT2-weighted,fluid-attenuatedinversionrecovery,gradient-echo(GRE),anddiffusion-weighted(DWI)imagingandmeasurementoftheapparentdiffusioncoefficient(ADC)wereperformedseriallyat6differenttimepoints(beforeand12h,3d,5d,10dand24dafterhemorrhage)byusinga3-TMRsystem.ThetemporalchangesofT1signalintensity(SI)correspondedwellwiththereportedhumandata.ThetemporalchangesofT2andGREsequences,withtheexceptionofT2andGREhyperintensitiesattheearlysubacutestage,alsomatched.ADCmeasurementswerehighattheearlysubacutestage,andDWI-SIpositivelycorrelatedwithT2-andGRE-SIfromtheearlysubacutestageonward.Inconclusion,MRIisanidealmethodforcharacterizingthetemporalevolutionofparenchymalalterationsafterICHindogs.ThesedatamightbeusefulfordifferentiatingclinicalstagesofICHindogs.
