Reproductiveexperienceinfemaleratsmodifiesacquiredbehaviors,induceslong-lastingfunctionalneuroadaptationsandcanalsomodifyspatiallearningandmemory.ThepresentstudysupportsandexpandsthisknowledgebasebyemployingtheMorriswatermaze,whichmeasuresspatialmemory.Age-matchedyoungadult(YNG)nulliparous(NULL;nonmated)andprimiparous(PRIM;onepregnancyandlactation)femaleratsweretested15dafterthelitter'sweaning.Inaddition,correspondingmiddle-aged(AGD)PRIM(matedinyoungadulthoodsothatpregnancy,parturition,andlactationoccurredatthesameageasinYNGPRIM)andNULLfemaleratsweretestedat18moofage.Behavioralevaluationincluded:1)acquisitionofreferencememory(platformlocationwasfixedfor14to19doftesting);2)retrievalofthisinformationassociatedwithextinctionoftheacquiredresponse(probetestinvolvingremovaloftheplatform24hafterthelasttrainingsession);and3)performanceinaworkingmemoryversionofthetask(platformpresentedinanovellocationeverydayfor13d,andmaintainedinafixedlocationwithineachday).YNGPRIMoutperformedNULLratsandshoweddifferentbehavioralstrategies.Theseresultsmayberelatedtochangesinlocomotor,mnemonic,andcognitiveprocesses.Inaddition,YNGPRIMexhibitedlessanxiety-likebehavior.ComparedwithYNGrats,AGDratsshowedlessbehavioralflexibilitybutstrongermemoryconsolidation.Thesedata,whichwereobtainedbyusingawell-documentedspatialtask,demonstratelonglastingmodificationsofbehavioralstrategiesinbothYNGandAGDratsassociatedwithasinglereproductiveexperience.
