Aprospectivestudyof43cotton-toptamarins,frominfancyto6to17monthsofage,wasconductedtodeterminetheepidemiologyofCampylobacterspp.infection.Nineinfantsfollowedforoneyearinanisolationunit,whereattendantsworeprotectiveclothing,didnotbecomeinfected.Inthemainfacilitywhere32of34animalshadrepeatedinfectionswithC.coli,6%oftheinfectionsdevelopedinitiallyinincubators,66%inthenurseryroom,and28%aftertransfertothemaincolony.FifteenofthesetamarinsalsowereinfectedwithC.jejuni.Twentypercentoftheinfectionsdevelopedinitiallyinthenurseryroomand80%inthecolony.PolyacrylamidegelelectrophoresisanalysisofC.jejuniculturesrevealedmultiplereinfectionswithdifferentstrains.Bothtypesofinfectionsweremostprevalentbetween3and9monthsofage.CampylobacterjejuniinfectiondevelopedmostfrequentlybetweenAprilandJuneandC.coliinfectiondevelopedbetweenOctoberandDecember.Inthenursery,diarrheadevelopedmostfrequentlyattimeswhentherewasnoinfectionwithCampylobacterspp.FortypercentofanimalswithdiarrheainthenurseryhadC.coliandnonehadC.jejuni,whereas,inthecolony,49%hadC.jejuniand11%hadC.coliinfections.Therewasnoassociationbetweentheseinfectionsanddietoridiopathiccolitis.
