Alargecolonyoflaboratoryzebrafish(Brachydaniorerio)usedinthestudyofearlyvertebrateembryogenesisbeganexperiencingacute,unexplainedmortalitythatapproached100%amongapproximately30-day-oldresidentfry.Theinitialdifferentialdiagnosisincludedammonia,nitrite,orchlorinetoxicosis,aswellasiatrogenicallyinducedtoxicosisassociatedwithimpropersanitationproceduresoflaboratoryequipment.Necropsyofdeadandmoribundfrypriortofixationrevealedswarmsofovoid-shaped,motile,ciliatedprotozoawitha"spiralingfootball"motion.Wetmountpreparationsofvariouswatersamplesalsocontainedhighnumbersofsimilarprotozoa.Histologicexaminationofaffectedfryrevealednumerous,periodicacid-Schiff-positiveformswithinthebodycoelom,andepithelialandmuscletissues.TheprotozoawereconsistentmorphologicallywithmembersofthegenusTetrahymena,whichisusuallyafree-living,nonpathogenicciliatedprotozoainfreshandsaltwaterenvironments.RelevantdiseaseassociatedwithTetrahymenaspp.inviviparousfishhasbeenreportedasaresultofconcurrentdisease,immunosuppression,orpoorwaterqualityconditions.Totheauthors'knowledge,thisisthefirstreportofanepizooticinvolvinglaboratorymaintainedzebrafish,andthediagnosticcourseandtherapeuticinterventionsundertakentoalleviateTetrahymenaspecies-associatedclinicaldisease.
