Anestheticsarewidelyusedinexperimentsinvestigatingneurotoxicityandneuroprotection;however,theseagentsareknowntointerferewiththeoutcomeoftheseexperiments.Thepurposeofthisoverviewistoreviewtheseeffectsandsuggestmethodsforminimizingunintendedconsequencesonexperimentaloutcomes.Informationontheneuroprotectiveandneurotoxiceffectsofisoflurane,dexmedetomidine,propofol,ketamine,barbiturates,halothane,xenon,carbondioxide,andnitrousoxideissummarized.Thepertinentcellsignalingpathwaysoftheseagentsarediscussed.Methodsofhumaneanimaleuthanasiawithoutanestheticsareconsidered.Mostanestheticsaltertheprocessesofneuronalsurvivalanddeath.Whendesigningsurvivalsurgeries,shamcontrolssubjectedtoanesthesiabutnotthesurgicalinterventionshouldbecomparedwithcontrolssubjectedtoneitheranesthesianorsurgery.Additionalcontrolscouldincludeusingananestheticwithadifferentmechanismofactionfromtheprimaryanestheticused.Becausetheeffectsofanestheticslessenwithtimeaftersurgery,survivalsurgeriesshouldincludelatertimepointsuntilatleast7daftertheprocedure.Humanemethodsofanimaleuthanasiathatdonotrequireanestheticsexistandshouldbeusedwheneverappropriate.
