Breastcanceristhemostcommonnonskincancerandisthesecondleadingcauseofcancer-relateddeathsinwomen.Mostmethodsofinterventioninvolvecombinationsofsurgery,chemotherapy,andionizingradiation.Bothchemotherapyandionizingradiationcanbeeffectiveagainstmanytypesofcancer,buttheyalsoharmnormaltissues.Theuseofnonionizing,magneticfieldshasshownearlypromiseinanumberofinvitroandanimalstudies.Ourstudytestedtheeffectofvaryingdurationsofmagneticexposureontumorgrowthandviabilityinmiceinjectedwithbreastcancercells.Cancercellswerelabeledthroughstableexpressionoffireflyluciferaseformonitoringoftumorgrowthandprogressionbyusinganinvivoimagingsystem.Wehypothesizedthatmagneticfieldexposurewouldinfluencetumorgrowthandprogression.Ourresultsshowedthatexposureofthemicetomagneticfieldsfor360mindailyforaslongas4wksuppressedtumorgrowth.Ourstudyisuniqueinthatitusesaninvivoimagingsystemtomonitorthegrowthandprogressionoftumorsinrealtimeinindividualmice.Ourfindingssupportfurtherexplorationofthepotentialofmagneticfieldsincancertherapeutics,eitherasadjunctorprimarytherapy.
