BackgroundandPurpose:Hypertrophiccardiomyopathy(HCM)ischaracterizedbysymmetricorasymmetrichypertrophyoftheleftand/orrightventricle.Morphologicandpathologicindices(MIandPI)ofheartswereestablishedforclassificationofHCMinpigs.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brMethods:Fiftyon-farm-performance-testedpigs(averagebodyweight,104.3kg;age,224.5days)wererandomlyselected.Heartweight,length,width,heart-to-bodyweightratio,andthicknessofthecranialandmiddleportionsofventricularseptumandleftventricularfreewallweremeasured.Myocytedisorganizationandnecrosis,myocardialandendocardialfibrosis,andintramuralcoronaryarterialocclusionwerescored.PrincipalcomponentanalysisandstepwiseregressionanalysiswereusedtoestablishMIandPI.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brResults:MIwasestablishedbyusingthefirstprincipalcomponentasthedependentvariableandapplyingstepwiseregressionanalysis.Heartswereclassifiedasmorphologicallynormal,suspicious,andhypertrophicaccordingtotherangeofMI.ThesamestatisticalmethodwasusedtofindPI.Heartswereclassifiedaspathologicallynormal,moderatelyaffected,orseriouslyaffectedaccordingtotherangeofPI.CombiningMIandPI,heartscouldbeclassifiedintofivegroups:nohypertrophywithminorlesion(normal);hypertrophybutwithrarelesion;nohypertrophybutseriouslyaffected;suspicious;andhypertrophyandseriouslyaffected(heartwithHCM).Another119heartswerecollectedandclassified.Thevariationofheartmeasurementswasconsistentwiththeoriginalpurposeofclassification.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brConclusions:UsingfewermeasurementsforidentificationofHCMobjectivelyinpigsseemstohavepracticalapplication.
