Objective:Tocomparelymphocytesubpopulationsinthebloodandlymphoidtissuesofnormalkittensbetween1and90daysofage.Methods:Lymphocytesubsetswithintheblood,thymus,andlymphnodeof24normalkittenswerequantifiedbyuseoftwo-colorfluorescenceflowcytometryandwerecomparedat1,23,46,or90daysafterbirth.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brResults:BloodBandTlymphocytesincreasedoverthe90-daypostnatalperiod.TheCD4+andCD8+subpopulationsofTlymphocytesincreased.However,CD8+lymphocytesincreasedmorethandidCD4+lymphocytes,resultinginreducedCD4-to-CD8ratio.By23daysofage,similarbutmoreabruptchangesintheCD4to-CD8ratiooccurredinthethymusandlymphnodes,coincidingwiththehighestthymus-to-bodyweightratioandgradualincreaseinmaturethymocytesexpressingapan-Tlymphocytemarker.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brConclusions:PostnatalthymopoiesisinthedomesticcatfavorsproductionofmatureCD8+TlymphocytesoverCD4+Tlymphocytes.ThiscoincideswiththeemergenceofCD8+lymphocytesinthelymphnodeandprecedesamoregradualincreaseinCD8+cellsintheblood.Therefore,theontogenyoftheseeffectorsofcellmediatedimmunitycouldbeinterruptedbyinfectiveagentsthattargetlymphoidtissuesoftheneonate.
