BackgroundandPurposes:Thepurposeofthestudywastodocumentdiurnalvariationofautonomicnervousfunctionsbyuseofpowerspectralanalysisofheartrate(HR)variability.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brMethods:ToclarifycharacteristicsofpowerspectralanalysisofHRvariability,electrocardiogram(ECG),bloodpressure(BP),andrespiratory(Resp)waveformsimultaneouslywererecorded.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brResults:Twomajorspectralcomponentswereexaminedatlow(LF)-andhigh(HF)-frequencybandsforHRvariability.CoherencebetweenHRandRespvariabilitiesandHRandBPvariabilitieswasmaximalatapproximately0.14and0.03Hz,respectively.Onthebasisofthesedata,twofrequencybandsofinterest#8212;LF(0.01to0.07Hz)andHF(0.07to1.0Hz)#8212;weredefined.AutonomicblockadestudiesindicatedthattheparasympatheticsystemmediatedtheHFandLFcomponents,whereasthesympatheticsystemmediatedonlytheLFcomponent;HRhadadiurnalpattern.TheLFandHFbandsinthedarkphasetendedtobehigherthanthoseinthelightphase.TheLF-to-HFratiohadadiurnalpatternsimilartothatoftheHR.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brConclusion:Parasympatheticnervousactivityinminiatureswinemaybepredominantinthedarkphase.Thecharacteristicsofpowerspectraanddiurnalvariationsofautonomicnervousfunctionsarealmostthesameasthoseofhumans.Therefore,miniatureswinemaybeausefulanimalmodelforfuturebiobehavioralandpharmacotoxicologicstudies.
