BackgroundandPurpose:Guineapigsareusedasmodelsforstudyofventriculartachyarrhythmias(VT);however,thetachyarrhythmiaoftenistransientanddoesnotpersist.Wedevelopedanopen-thoraxguineapigmodelofsustainedventricularfibrillation(VF).brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brMethod:Bilateralthoracotomywasperformedoneightguineapigsweighing865to1,464g,andtwosutureswerepositionedintherightventricularapexforthepurposeofpacing.TwomethodswereusedtoinduceVF:a50-Hzburst(normalpacing),andaninitial15beatsat70%oftheR-Rintervalfollowedbya100-Hzburstfor84beats(rapidpacing).FifteenattemptsatinducingVFwereperformedbyuseofeachmethod.BloodpressurewasrecordedbeforeandafterdevelopmentofVF,whichwasdefinedasVTwithmeanbloodpressureconsistently10mmHg.Afinalobservationwasobtainedusingthenormalpacingmethodwithoutdefibrillation.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brResults:UseofbothmethodssuccessfullyinducedVF.Asignificantrelationshipbetweenbodyweight1,021gandabilitytosustainandsurviveVFwasdetected.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brConclusion:TheguineapigisausefulrodentmodelforthestudyofVFanddefibrillation.
