Incontrasttothoseforhumanfemales,observationalcycledataavailableforchimpanzeessuggestthatmenstrualcycling,andthusreproductivepotential,continuesuntilneardeath.Thisstudydocumentsage-relatedchangesinestrouscyclingandhormoneprofilesin14femalechimpanzees(Pantroglodytes)ranginginagefrom31to50y.Estrousdatawereanalyzedfromdailycyclecharts,averaging13.3yofcycledatapersubject,afteromissionofgestationalandpostpartumamenorrhea.Concentrationsoftotalluteinizinghormone(LH),follicle-stimulatinghormone(FSH),estradiol(Esubxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sub),andotherhormoneswereassayedinserumsamplestakenbiannually.SamplecollectiontimeswerechosentoavoidtheovulatoryLHandFSHpeaksofthefemale'scycleandyieldedameanof19.6serumsamplesoveranaverageof14.4ypersubject.Analysisofcyclechartsrevealedanegativerelationshipbetweenageandthepercentageofcycledaysatmaximaltumescence.Therealsowerepositiverelationshipsbetweenageandthelengthoftheestrouscycleandageandthepercentageofcycledaysatcompletedetumescence.AnalysisofhormonaldatarevealedcurvilinearrelationshipsbetweenageandbothLHandFSH.Thesecycleandhormonalchangesmirrorthoseinperimenopausalandmenopausalwomen.Ourdataprovideevidenceofperimenopause(at30to35y)andmenopause(at35to40y)inthechimpanzee.
