ThisarticleexaminestheworkofapopularMuslimwomanonYouTube,AmenaKhan,whohasattractedover310thousandsubscriberstoherchannelandrunsasuccessfulonlineboutique.WhileAmena’shijabtutorialsandlifestylevideosmightappeartobejustaboutsuperficialtopicslikefashionormakeup,thisarticlearguesthatshedoesactuallabortonotonlyproduceanaestheticstylebuttoalsocreateanaffectiveconditionofwhatitmeanstobeaMuslimwomanlivingwithinaneoliberalcontext.Amena’svideosillustratewhatMichaelHardt(1999)definesas“affectivelabor”withinthisneoliberaleconomy.Amenamightsellhijabsonline,butshedoesnotactuallyproducephysicalobjects.Whatshedoesproduceisanaffectivestate—feelingsaroundhowtoproperlyactwithinthisneoliberalculturewhilestillmaintainingIslamicpiety.ThespaceofYouTubealsoallowsforAmenatoblenddifferentaffectsandaestheticstyles,suchasneoliberalelementsofaspiration,creativityandindividualitywithIslamicethicslikepiety,modestyandsubmission.Ultimately,thereasonwhyAmenacanattractviewersandrunasuccessfulfashionbusinessisbecausesheworkstoproduceanaffectivestatethatseamlesslymovesbetweenIslamicethicsandneoliberalvalues.
