Thisessayisbasedonthedatacollectedinatwo-yearresearchproject(between2010–2012),underthetitleTelephonyAndTurkishModernization:SocialHistoryofTelephoneSinceTheOttomanEra(1881–2010),whichwasprimarilyconcernedwiththesocialhistoryoftelephoneinTurkeyduringispeculiarlylonghistoryofimplementationanddispersal.Theprojectwasconductedasoralhistoryandarchiveresearch,andacomparativeapproachwasadoptedtoidentifyandanalyzethedivergentnatureoftheirfindings.br/Accordingtothefindingsoftheresearchedarchivematerials(newspapers,comicandpopularmagazines),theimplementationoftelephoneintotheTurkishhousescreatedcomplexfeelings,whichfounditsexpressionasboth“emulation”and“intimidation”attachedtotheexperienceoftelephoneinadoublesystemofrepresentation.Whereastheoralhistoryresearchfindingsarediscordantinthesensethattelephoneisrememberedasasymbolof“solidarity”and“sharing”inthenarrativesoftelephonememories,andwasaccommodatedintothetraditionaleverydaylifeoftheneighborhood.br/Throughthecaseoftelephonetechnology,thisessayaimsatpointingoutthegapbetweenthediscursiveconstructionoftheelementsoftheexperienceofmodernityandtheactualexperienceofthehistoricalsubjects;andarguesthatthisgapshouldbedisclosedwithmoreethnographicstudiesforitalsopointsafeelingof‘lack’thatpervasivelyinfusesitselfintoourpresentandfindsitsexpressionintheself-narrativesoftheoralhistoryasanostalgiaforthepast.
