ThispaperarguesthattheroleofInternetactivismintheGreenMovement,asocialprotestmovementthatemergedafterthecontested2009presidentialelectionsinIran,liesinthecreativeconfigurationofcomplexnetworksthatprimarilyinteractthroughmeaning-ladenperformancesthatcarveoutspacesofdissent.Forsocialmovements,especiallyunderauthoritarianruleliketheGreenMovement,cyberspacepresentsakindofsocialspacewhereinimaginariesofselfandother,resistanceandpowershapebondsofinteractivity.Suchbondsaredescribedhereas“socialaffinities”thatareaboutcontentiousperformances,actionsthatdisplayintenseemotionsandnarrativesofprotestationagainstpower.Accordingly,thenotionof“performativenetworks”underlineshowtheIranianGreenMovement,especiallysincethestaterepressionthatfollowedtheelections,hascompromisedaninteractivenetworkorganizedarounddramaticdiscoursesandpracticesofcontestation.Intermsofstructure,thepaperisdividedintothreesections.(1)Thefirstsectionshowshowanelectoralcampaignwasputtogetherthroughlooselynetworkedassociationsthat(partly)operatedthroughcomputer-mediated-communicationthatfacilitatedlogisticalresourcesfortheactors.Inthepre-electionperiod,Internetplayedaprominentroleinpromotingandmobilizingadecentralizedmovementthroughofflineandonlineshiftingnetworkconnections,aphaseofcyberactivismthatisidentifiedhereasself-promotingnetworks.(2)Thesecondsectionlooksatwhatfollowedaftertheelectionresultswereannounced,afterwhichtheregimeunleasheditssecurityforcestocrackdownonthestreetprotests.Cyberspaceemergedasasetofother-offensiveperformativeactions,contentiousstrategieslikeorganizationofstreet-demonstrations,hackactivismandwebsitedefacementsthatidentifiedamorebelligerentandaggressivestrategyaimedatdirectlychallengingstatepower,bothofflineandonline.(3)Thethirdandfinalphasecompromisesself-maintainingperformativeactionsthatlargelyrevolvesaroundmemorialandmythicalnarrativesforthemaintenanceofsocialaffinitiesinlightofstatecrackdownsinbothphysicalandcyberspaces.ThepaperfinallyarguesthatInternetactivisminthecontextofsocialmovementsinvolvesdramaticperformancesofaffectivenaturethatformnetworkassociationsandvibrantinformalpublicspheres.
