Thisessaydiscussestheissueofcontextualizationinstudiesofonlineplatformusageandonlinematerial.Itarguesthataseparationbetweenonlineandofflinecannotbesustained,associalmediausersrelatetomanydifferentonlineandofflinecontextssimultaneously.Whyprotagonistsmakeuseofonlineplatforms,whichplatformstheyuse,howtheymakeuseofthem,whotheyseektoreach,andsoon,isalldependentonthevariousgeographicalandsocialcontextswithinwhichtheywork.Atthesametime,theseusersarealsopartofandareinfluencedbydifferentonlinecontextsthatmaybebasedontopic,identity,orgeography,andwhichmaybelocal,national,regionalorinternational.Whenwestudyonlinematerial–beitactivism,languageuse,discourse,orsomethingelse-wemustdosowithalltheserelevantsettingsinmind.Throughouttheessay,IseektoillustratethesecomplexrelationshipsbetweendifferentonlineandofflinecontextsthroughconcreteexamplesfromEgyptandKuwait.Iarguethatthematerialshowsthatwecannotgeneralizeandsimplyassumesimilarpatternsofusageofonlineplatformsproducingsimilaroutcomesacrossdifferentcontexts.Still,researchsofarhasprovidedinsightsthatareimportantbothintheirownrightand,notleast,asmethodologicalandtheoreticalconsiderationsforfuturestudies,andIconcludebysuggestingthreeprinciplesthatshouldguideourinvestigationsofonlinematerial.
