Socialmedia,particularlyblogging,FacebookandTwitter,haveplayedakeyroleininstigating,acceleratingandevenorganizingsomeoftheuprisingsandrevolutionsthathavebeentakingplaceallovertheMiddleEast.Thisrolehasbeeneffectiveingalvanizingtheyouthandempoweringthemintheirfightsagainstrepressiveregimesandtheirplightformorefreedomandindependence.Thisstudylooksintothesocialmediaroleintheso-called“Facebookrevolution”,whichtookplaceinEgyptinJanuary2011andtheso-called“Twitteruprising”,whichtookplaceinIraninJune2009.TheEgyptianrevolutiondidsucceedintopplingtheregime,whiletheIranianuprisingfailed.WhydidthecallsforpoliticalchangethatstartedinthevirtualworldleadtoactualchangeintherealworldinEgyptbutnotinIran?ThisstudyaddressesthisquestionbyprovidingacriticalanalysisoftheavailableliteratureandinterviewswithonlineactivistsinEgyptandIran.TheauthorsusedtheSPINmodel(Segmentation,polycentrism,integrationandnetworking)asatheoreticalframeworkandconcludedthatthemodelhelpedsocialmediasucceedinEgypt,butnotinIran.
