The need for the protection of food security is mentioned in both the Preamble and Annex II of the WTO Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) and while it is formally recognised by the WTO as a valid concern. The agricultural sector is one of the most sensitive sectors on account of its direct relationship to livelihoods. For example, 70 per cent of those suffering from hunger have no access, or inadequate access to land. Also import to food security is soil protection and access to water.
