As the only protected area in the whole south west of Morocco, theSouss MassaNational Park(SMNP) ischaracterized by a remarkable biodiversity, withmore than 300 plants species,250 bird species, 20mammal species and also by thehigh diversity of its ecosystems, such as theAragnia spinosaforest, steppes, dunesandcoastalwetlands.This park can play a leading role in the region by enhancing its ecotourism potential and therefore contributing to its economic development.We intended todemonstrate in this study, by estimating the recreational value, one populararea,theRAMSAR siteof the Estuary ofMassa River (EOM). It is located 50km from theurban centerofAgadir Cityand it attractsabout30,000visitors a year.To determineits recreational value,thecontingent valuation methodandtravelcost methodwere applied. The results from 480 surveys, conducted during 2010, showed thatthe consumer surplusper person pervisit is estimatedatDH490,196($US65.36)andthe willingness to payper visitoris about DH46,523($US6.20). According to this economic valuation, any future local developmentmust take into account, the opportunity that EOM offers as a recreational site, with high ecotourism potential.
