Dr. Guibal obtained his PhD degree in “waste management” from the Institut National des SciencesAppliquées (INSA) de Lyon (France) in 1990, after getting his diploma from French engineeringschool, Ecole des mines d’Alès (now called Institut Mines Telecom – Mines Ales), in 1986. He authored about 230 scientific publications. He is developing a research at the frontier between environmental engineering and material sciences, “playing” with the properties of biopolymers, ionic liquidsand metal ions for designing new materials and applications (hydrometallurgy, metal extraction, wastewater treatment, supported catalysis, insulating and fire-retardant materials, etc.). More specifically, his research group is devoted to designing new conditionings of materials of biological origin(biopolymers such as chitosan and alginate; agriculture wastes, etc.) such as hydrogel beads, membranes, fibers, hollow fibers and foams/sponges. They also make profit of the remarkable properties ofencapsulation of these biopolymers for elaborating composite materials with advanced properties playing with high masstransfer properties and safe confinement of micro- and nano-particles. In addition, through intense international collaborations(cooperative network), a special attention was paid to chemical modifications of magnetic biopolymer/polymer supports fordesigning high-performance sorbents.
