Zoning optimisation of the potential national park Jiu's defile

Between 1990-2001, in the area of the potential Jiu's Defile National Park (11.127ha) 3 nature reserves were set-up: Padurea Chitu-Bratcu - 1418 ha, Stancile Rafaila - 1 ha, Piatra Sfinxul Lainicilor - 1 ha and were proposed: (a) the preservation of the entire defile as a different complex nature reserve and (b) the creation of the Jiu's Defile National Park (Stoiculescu, 1989, 1999). The completion and resuming of the researches, in 2004, led to the conclusion that the park belongs to the landscape type "beech with hornbeam and lime Balcan forests with thermophilous elements", which belongs to 2 of the 9 bioclimatic layers of Romania, containing 15 out of the 214 forest sites, 5 of the 50 forest formations and 14 of the 306 forest types. Six types of ecosystems were found here: forest - 9.393 ha (84,5 %), of which virgin forests 3.852 ha and cvasivirgin 168 ha, the rest of the forests, 5.373 ha, being naturally regenerated; meadow - 1.632 ha (14,6 %), saxicol - 102 ha (0,9 %), aquatic - the water courses, riparian and cavernicol, with a high natural degree. Also, 10 protected nature habitats were identified, of which 4 are priority habitats under the European and Romanian legislation and the brief animal and plant species inventory was established. The inventory comprises 1142 species, of which 203 protected, including 11 endemic species, 4 sub-endemic species and 28 rare species. Of those, there are 441 species of fauna and 701 species of flora. The 203 priority and protected species (168 fauna and 35 flora) identified through the present study are protected by 445 legislative Romanian and European acts. Those results are proving the belonging of the Jiu's Defile area to the high biodiversity priority areas. The analyze of those elements led to the internal zoning of the park, in to main reserve categories: (a) existent scientific reserves - 1.464 ha, + proposed scientific reserves 2.867 ha, (b) proposed nature reserves - 4.638 ha. Because of practical reasons, the 2 reserve categories were included in a "special conservation area", proposed to be officialized. Surprinsingly, excepting the Vipera ammodytes ammodytes, almost all the Romanian endemic fauna and flora species are not protected, and as well the specific Romanian habitats, which are not included in the European Council Directive 92/43.
