One of the central themes that critics identify in Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrenceis the juxtaposition between the vitalist and rationalist mental outlooks and life attitudes,with the former, epitomized by the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors, associated with the realm ofnature, natural order, fertility, and life force, and the latter, representative of the sterile andefficient era of the industrial class society, exemplified by Clifford Chatterley. Aligned with(and mapped onto) this division is another binary opposition–that between mental life andlife proper, or to put it more judgmentally (as the author’s sympathies are unmistakablehere), between sere intellectualism and lusty sensualism. I return to this familiar ground,covered multiple times by the critics in the past, in order to shed new light on the notions ofsexual mastery and submission in specific connection with vitalism. I will look at thepatterns of dominant and submissive behavior that arise in the novel with the goal ofdemonstrating that these configurations of mastery and subservience represent instances ofmasochism in its classical formulation as a sexual or psychological perversion of derivingpleasure from pain (both in a direct and figurative sense).
