Molasses and corn meal supplementation of lambs fed ammoniated hay

Twenty-four lambs (liveweight, LW = 14.1 ± 1.26 kg), housed in individual pens, were used to compare four treatments: (T0) the control of dry ammoniated Brachiaria humidicola hay (AH) ad libitum ; ( T1) AH and 220 g of corn meal (CM) /kg AH intake; ( T2) AH and 350 g of cane molasses /kg AH; and T3 AH and 110 g CM + 175 g MOL/kg AH, during 70 d (14 d of adaptation and 56 d for comparison). Compared to untreated hay ammonification increased the crude protein (CP) content from 3.22 to 6.64%. Voluntary intake (VI), of AH was greater in T0 (510.4 g/d) than in T1 (466.2 g/d), and T2 (415.2 g/d), but not different (P > 0.05) from T3 (479.7 g/d). Expressed relative to LW the corresponding values were 3.24, 2.29, 2.69, and 2.97%. The VI of total daily dry matter (DM) by lambs supplemented with CM (T1, 565.2 g and T3 594.3 g), but not that of the MOL supplemented (T2, 524.0 g) surpassed (P < 0.05) T0 (510.4 g). The VI of CP was also greater in T1 and T3 given the higher CP content of CM (12.0% in the DM). Rate of daily grain in LW and feed conversion index were 27.02, 47.5, 20.31, and 38.61 g and 53.35, 82.28, 33.32 and 64.42 g LW/kg DM, in the four respective treatments, without significant differences, but with important numerical variations in favor of supplementation with CM, which is recommended for use in lambs fed low-quality forage during the dry season.
