We performed large-scale extracellular recordings in the prelimbic cortex (PL) of rats that consistently showed mixed behavior of the avoidance and the escape. We used a machine- learning algorithm to quantify how much populations of neurons in the PL encode behavioral event differently. A selective portion of PL neurons changed their firing pattern to three different behav- ioral events, and the three-class classifiers were able to differentiate neural ensembles of the events. Intriguingly, the PL showed a pre- dictive component for the avoidance head-withdrawal, indicating its involvement in the planning of the avoidance. Our result is consistent with the previous studies indicating that the prelimbic cortex encodes information related to decision making, but PL may play roles in the active planning of defensive decision making such as shutting down foraging and initiating avoidance.
