Catalytic effect of CTAB reverse micelles on the oxidation of indigo carmine by periodate

The kinetics of oxidation of indigo carmine by periodate has beeninvestigated in the presence of CTAB reverse micellar medium. The reactionobeys first order kinetics with respect to each of the reactants. The reactionis markedly catalysed in the presence of CTAB reverse micelles as compared to inaqueous medium under identical conditions. The significant increase in rate is attributed to the special properties of the water pool of reverse micelles which are controlled by a W parameter where W = ([H2O]/[CTAB]).? The specific rate constant, k3 {=k'/ [IO4–] [H2O]}is found to be constant for all values of W > 4.4, implying that water isone of the reactants and is involved in the rate determining step. Such studiesregarding the role of water cannot be obtained in conventional aqueous medium. The effectof CTAB has been analyzed using the Berezin pseudo-phase model.
